Notre Dame defeated Purdue, 23-12, Saturday, with a performance more notable for what the Irish didn't do than what they did. In the first game of the season, they didn't burst out with big plays. They moved the chains. Other than one red-zone fumble, they didn't stop themselves.

WTOP Maryland reported that Montgomery County Police have shot a gunman, James J. Lee, who held several people hostage in the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring for nearly four hours Wednesday. Three people who had been taken hostage are now safe and out of the building, Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger says. The gunman is in custody. There is no word on his condition
