O’Donnell Earns College Degree Just Ahead Of Delaware GOP Primary
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
I know we have been a little hard on conservative Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell , but Friday’s story by David Catanese in Politico takes the cake. According to Catanese : Seventeen years after she attended the school and two weeks before her Republican primary against Rep. Mike Castle, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell officially earned her college degree, according to an official from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Scott Giglio, assistant director of public relations at the Madison, N.J., university, told POLITICO the Tea Party Express-backed Senate hopeful was officially awarded her bachelor of arts degree in English literature on Wednesday. Citing privacy reasons, Giglio could not explain the reasoning behind the timing, but O’Donnell’s campaign manager said Friday the candidate met a final course requirement this summer.

Rick Scott Shuns Mobile In Running Mate Announcement
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
In 2008, Obama famously sent a text message announcing Joe Biden would be his running mate. Florida gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott (R) decided to forgo the mobile route and announced his choice for Lieutenant Governor by e-mail. Vince Harris, senior web consultant for the Scott campaign, explained, “Email ‘still king’ when it comes to fundraising and communicating with voters. We chose purposely not to engage in a mobile program. I learned with the [Bob] McDonnell campaign… that mobile just isn’t there yet in terms of usage.” Harris understands that what might be “hot” in the tech world isn’t necessarily the most effective tool for a campaign. Could Gmail’s Priority Inbox Improve Political Emails?
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
I love this. Nancy Sola of TechPresident has a quote from creative director Elliot Ross about Gmail’s Priority Inbox impact on political e-mails: “The key to getting into the priority inbox is relevance. The user is now actively teaching filters what they want to read, so every mailing should be as useful and engaging as possible. This means segregating your lists, following design and HTML best practice and cutting out irrelevant ‘blanket blasts’ to everyone. It might even mean mailing people less sometimes.” I hope Priority Inbox makes political campaigns tailor their e-mail campaigns to certain people rather than blasting them to everyone. The GOP’s Colorado Divide
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
Re-posted from The American Spectator By: Ford O’Connell and Steve Pearson Republicans head into the stretch run of this campaign season with a chance to make major gains in Colorado. But if an amicable solution to a tense intraparty divide at the top of the ticket is not resolved in a timely manner, the GOP could be locked out of the Centennial State for years to come. Today, Colorado is viewed as a solidly Democratic state. Obama carried it with 53.5 percent of the vote in 2008. The governor, both senators, both houses of the legislature and five of seven congressional seats are controlled by Democrats. Republicans coughed up both Senate seats, two House seats, the governorship and both houses of the General Assembly in just two elections — 2004 and 2006.

Google Counter-Offer Of 15% Raise, x4 Stock Benefits, 500k Cash Turned Down For Facebook Job
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
TechCrunch is reporting that Facebook is in a recruiting sweet spot, “Out of control growth in users and revenue and a nearly certain IPO run in the near future. That’s when employee growth expands at the greatest rate for a company as it grows from hundreds to thousands and then tens of thousands of employees.” As a result, 118 Google employees have left to go to Facebook, according to LinkedIn . To stop this exodus Google is offering extraordinary counteroffers: “One recent Googler, we’ve confirmed, was recently offered a counter offer he couldn’t refuse (except he did). He was offered a 15% raise on his $150,000 mid level developer salary, quadruple the stock benefits and…wait for it…a $500,000 cash bonus to stay for a year. He took the Facebook offer anyway.” That is a whole lot of cheese. However, TechCrunch points out: “Facebook is quietly telling people, never in writing, that there’s no reason their stock won’t hit $100 billion in total valuation over the next couple of years. No guarantees, yadda yadda, but hey if you get 1/10 of 1%, that’s $100 million in stock. Now it’s a party.” Wish I had to make a choice like that.

Playing With Fire In Delaware

On Monday, the Tea Party Express announced that it would wade into the Delawa re GOP Sen ate primary by funding a sizeable amount of television and radio advertising to support conservative Christine O’Donnell in her bid against Mike Castle . After the Tea Party Express demonstrated a keen eye for spotting opportunity and flying below the radar in Alaska, GOP loyalists have to be scratching their heads and Delaware Democrats should be licking their chops at this late foray into the First State. At some level, it would be fair to draw a parallel between Lisa Murkowski and Mike Castle. Yet, unlike Alaska’s Joe Miller, O’Donnell is not an unknown candidate. Recent polls show her leading the pack when it comes to unfavorable ratings, so Delaware voters are not in the dark about her campaign. While O’Donnell may fair better than Castle in a conservative purity test, she can be considered, at this juncture, a flawed candidate. As Hotline On Call’s Jeremy Jacobs notes , O’Donnell’s personal finances merit closer scrutiny; as does her record

Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
From the Office of Governor Bob McDonnell Governor Bob McDonnell today declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a step authorizing state agencies to take precautionary action to prepare for any potential impacts in eastern Virginia from Hurricane Earl. A state of emergency must be declared under state law so that additional resources are available and positioned for use if necessary. The latest National Weather Service models show that Earl is expected to take a track to the east of the Commonwealth with minimal impacts. Models also indicate Hurricane Earl will be well clear of the Mid-Atlantic region prior to the holiday weekend. Speaking about the declaration, Governor McDonnell noted, “The current forecast has Hurricane Earl passing east of Virginia later this week. However, a change in the storm’s path could bring hazardous weather conditions to eastern Virginia. This declaration is a precautionary move which will allow state agencies to be ready just in case resources are needed.” In declaring a state of emergency, the governor authorizes state agencies to identify and position resources and manpower for quick response anywhere they are needed in Virginia. The Daily Progress reported that Clark filed for bankruptcy in 1993 and has a history of debt going back to the 1980s. In order for him to drop out, Clark said, “the person or persons who tipped off the media must reveal themselves, must say how they came in possession of the documents, disclose whether they were compensated, reveal any political or campaign affiliation, and say on whose behalf they gathered the information.” Clark added that this isn’t about giving up, but rather bringing transparency to the race. It appears several down-ballot candidates in Florida primaries bought “Google online ads on mobile geo-targeted to specific districting, hoping to capture people who are doing last-minute research while waiting in line at the polls.” Christian Ulvert, Dan Gelber’s aide, explained, “For us, the biggest distinguishing factor is that every major newspaper in the state endorsed Gelber, so that’s a message we could get to voters in a few words in an ad, catching their attention on their phones as they’re going into the polls. Lower voter turnout was expected, so we turned to the digital world.” I would be surprised if a majority of Congressional campaigns aren’t using geo-targeted mobile ads on November 2. On Social Media, Wear Your Politics On Your Sleeve
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
Alex Priest has a good article about not hiding your political beliefs on social media. Politicians depend on supporters to help push their content, so this article should make them happy. Here are a couple of his points: It’ll come out eventually, anyway. Regardless of the career you’re in, chances are at least one of your political views will come out at some point. Whether it’s in a work environment, during a conversation with a co-worker, or at a happy hour chatting with your boss, politics infect every corner of our lives. Trying to keep politics and social media separate is impractical and simply not worth it. If an employer has a problem with it, you probably don’t want to work for them

The Tea Party At The Michigan GOP Convention
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
In a raucous, record-setting eight-hour session, tea party boosters showed their muscle at the state Republican Party convention, barely ratifying gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder’s choice for lieutenant governor, Brian Calley, and forcing showdowns in fights for attorney general and secretary of state. In what’s supposed to be a big Republican year, it was clear Republicans have a tiger by the tail with the tea party. The unexpected race for lieutenant governor, customarily the sole discretion of the nominee for governor, provided the loudest fireworks. Meanwhile, former congressman and appeals court Judge Bill Schuette squeaked by Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop as the delegates’ choice for attorney general. Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson won the day’s final showdown — for secretary of state — after courting tea party supporters

Virginia Redistricting Faces Likely Challenges
Posted at ProjectVirginia - Where Politics Meets Social Media
The partisan split in the General Assembly might ease lawmakers’ duties next year in the every-10-year exercise in partisan redistricting. But this surface unity regarding legislative districts might not hold up when legislators rewrite the 11 congressional districts, said Mike McDonald , a redistricting expert at George Mason University . With a Democratic majority in the Senate and a Republican majority in the House of Delegates , the House may let the Senate Democrats control their process and the Senate may let the House Republicans do their thing, he said. One possibility is that legislators could let Virginia’s congressional delegation redraw its own boundary lines. But McDonald predicts that whatever plan is devised will wind up in court, as happened after the 1990 census and the 2000 census.

Florida Leads The Way Online

Democrats, Republicans, and Independents may disagree on policy issues, but in the state of Florida this year, they all agree on one thing: you need the web to win. While money and time spent courting voters online may differ from campaign to campaign, Florida seems to be leading the way online this year. When Marco Rubio jumped in the Florida Senate race more than a year ago, few seemed to think his chances were high. An aggressive online campaign and help from the conservative blogosphere (spearheaded by Erick Erickson) helped his candidacy gain traction nationally, and then back home in the Sunshine State. Rick Scott’s campaign for Governor was launched with an understanding from the beginning to run an aggressive, targeted online campaign.
