Good news for the Taliban
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
It seems that the manufactured controversy over the Islamic Center in Lower Manhattan is doing wonders for at least one interested party -- the Taliban! This according to a no less knowledgeable source than...the Taliban itself. Newsweek quotes "Taliban operative Zabihullah" as saying: By preventing this mosque from being built, America is doing us a big favor...It's providing us with more recruits, donations and popular support. A true propaganda bonanza that "now heads the list of talking points in Taliban meetings with fighters, villagers, and potential recruits." Says Zabihullah: "The more mosques you stop the more jihadis we will get."

Over at the Coffee Party website , Annabel Park refutes the ridiculous notion that America isn't big enough to be both "a representative democracy and a republic." Annabel explains: The whole meme that we are not a democracy but a republic is based on a distortion and diminution of the concept of democracy into a single, abstract form of it: a direct and pure democracy. Yes, we do not have THAT form of a democracy. We don't go to the polls to make every single governmental decision.

Another day, another spelling mistake by the Washington Post . McDonnell is scheduled to unveil his plan for ABC privatization next week. Howell said she continues to hear skepticism from fellow Democrats and some Republicans about the governor's claim that his plan will fully replace the annual revenue the state now receives from its 332 liquor stores. "I don't see how he's going to get it past," she said. Past, passed, whatever (or maybe, as Faulkner said, "The past is never dead

Bob McDonnell’s Great "Privatization" Plan? Raise Taxes on Bars and Restaurants!
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
I'm sure that this will go over really well with Bob McDonnell's base. Restaurants and bars that buy liquor from state stores now would have to pay for the privilege of buying directly from private wholesalers under a privatization plan being prepared for unveiling by Gov. Bob McDonnell next week. McDonnell is counting on restaurants and bars for as much as $38 million a year as part of a complex package of taxes and fees designed to make up the revenue now generated by Virginia's state liquor monopoly. The money would come from a new 4 percent tax that would be imposed on drinks sold in restaurants or bars , according to sources familiar with the plan

Good stuff, courtesy of the BlueGreen Alliance . SPRINGFIELD, VA - A bus tour highlighting the potential to create good American jobs by passing comprehensive clean energy and climate change legislation in the U.S. Senate stopped by the Re/Build Warehouse in Springfield, Virginia, today to urge Senators Warner and Webb to support action on comprehensive legislation that will create and save millions of American, clean energy jobs, including up to 50,000 jobs in Virginia . "Nearly 1 out of 10 Americans are still out of work and we need action now to create and preserve millions of jobs across the country," said Lindsay Patterson, President of USW Local 404 of Philadelphia.

It's now been over a week since the once-ballyhooed, privatized state computer system crashed, a mess caused by a malfunctioning storage unit in Richmond. I'm following Ken Cuccinelli's wildly inappropriate and unethical , taxpayer-funded, political "town hall" meeting in Rocky Mountain at NLS's Twitter feed . Must be 200+ people here" *"Wow, they are introducing Republican party officials for applause at a town hall paid for by the state." *"Cooch just said 'from the dark side' when intro speaker said he was from Fairfax." *"Poindexter claiming VA passed HC Freedom Act in response to federal bill that was passed. actually 2 month earlier" *"Ken says he is here to discuss federal legislation that will raise electricity costs.

Who Needs the General Assembly When You’ve Got Ken Cuccinelli?

Slate has an interesting take on Ken Cuccinelli's time as AG so far (In Ken We Trust: Why do Ken Cuccinelli's legal opinions always match his personal ambitions?). It's really interesting to see the national take on all this since we're somewhat used to it in Virginia. What Slate starts to get at (but I think ultimately misses) is that Cuccinelli isn't just using the law to push an agenda--he actually believes that his agenda and the law are not distinct things.

Rick Boucher Ad Defines "Non Sequitur"
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
According to Merriam Webster , "non sequitur" can be defined as "a statement (as a response) that does not follow logically from or is not clearly related to anything previously said." Well, Merriam Webster's got nothing on Rick Boucher, who provides a perfect, video definition of "non sequitur" in this ad. So, let's get this straight: Rick Boucher has Southwest Virginia values, and " that's why he voted against the health care law" and is "a leader in the bipartisan effort to balance the budget." There's just one problem with that reasoning, namely that the health care law and increased federal spending both disproportionately help relatively low-income, net-recipient-of-federal-money areas like Southwest Virginia. Also, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics illustrates, Southwest Virginia has among the highest unemployment rates (11.3% in Radford City, 11.6% in Smyth County, 11.4% in Grayson County, 11.2% in Patrick County, etc.) in the Commonwealth. How would cutting back on federal spending or making it harder for people to get health care coverage improve conditions in this region?

Warming Threatens Jamestown, Chincoteague, Shenandoah
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
Reports USA Today's Green House : Human-caused climate change threatens to flood Jamestown, the first permanent European settlement in what became the American colonies and the United States, says a report Wednesday by environmental groups. Jamestown Island, the site of the original 1607 settlement, is low enough to be inundated by rising seas and tidal waters -- even if the waters do not rise as much by 2100 as scientists predict, according to the report by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Colorado-based Rocky Mountain Climate Organization. "Climate change poses the greatest risk our National Parks have ever faced," says Theo Spencer, senior advocate of NRDC's Climate Center. He says Jamestown, along with two other parks, attracts six million visitors each year who spend more than $200 million and support 4,000 Virginia jobs. The report (PDF) says the other two parks also face grave risks: Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge could lose its beach and Shenandoah National Park could see it brilliant fall colors muted by air pollution and encroaching pine trees .

Best Headline Ever? "Virginia State Judge Screws the Cooch"
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
If you're not a fan of Ken Kookinelli, you've gotta love this headline by "Above the Law" - "Virginia State Judge Screws the Cooch." Not bad, not bad at all, definitely one of the best headlines I've seen in a long time, what do you think? By the way, I find it fascinating that even though this writer admits, "I don't care at all about the environment" (and finds anthropogenic global warming to be "such a boring story"), he is nonetheless forced to conclude to conclude that "The Cooch is tripping." With regard to Cooch's "latest...crusde," "Above the Law" adds, "It appears that The Cooch is on a mission from God, and this latest obstacle will do nothing to deter him ."

Is It Time for a "Transpartisan Dialogue" Over "Coffee?"
Posted at Blue Virginia - Front Page - Blue Virginia
At this point, after watching the "Party of No" and the "Tea Party" in action since Barack Obama's election (and, really, during the entire Bush presidency), I'm highly skeptical that Coffee Party founder Annabel Park's suggestion of "transpartisan dialogue" will prove to be worthwhile. How can you "dialogue" with people who create their own "facts," who are impervious to empirical evidence (e.g., the overwhelming science of global warming), who hold ignorant and bigoted views (Islamophobic, xenophobic, homophobic, key word "phobic") of their fellow citizens, who hold Democracy itself - and "dialogue," for that matter - in contempt? I mean, I wish Annabel luck, and if anyone can do it she probably can; seriously, the woman's a force of nature. And maybe, just maybe, a movement of rational, culturally diverse, fact-based, solutions-oriented, and non-partisan (rather than hyper-partisan to the point of blindness) people, opening a "transpartisan" dialogue over "coffee" with the non-crazy elements of the Republican/Tea Party coalition, can win the day in 2010 America.

Yesterday, I got word that Jim Webb's Communications Director, Jessica Smith, is leaving her job after 4 years with "Team Webb" (she started with the Webb campaign in 2006, which is where I first got to know her) to take a Schedule C position with the Department of Justice. There, Jessica writes, she will "focus on civil rights issues, and among other tasks...provide communications support for the 93 U.S. Attorneys across the country." That's great news for the Department of Justice, and I wish Jessica the best of luck in her new position. By the way, in 2007, Jessica was named one of the "50 Most Beautiful People on Capitol Hill" for her "porcelain skin and brilliant smile," "flame-red hair and whip-smart bearing." That's not a bad combination of traits to team with top-notch professionalism, diligence, loyalty, etc. Again, good luck to Jessica! P.S.

The Danville Register & Bee finally takes on a question we've all been asking ourselves: What's with all these Democrats trying to take credit for the economic recovery package helping avert another Great Depression ? Rep. Tom Perriello, he of the shoe in the cowpie campaign commercial, really stepped in it last week. Perriello, under fire for his vote in favor of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, said the stimulus prevented another Great Depression. "The Recovery Act helped avert a Great Depression that was looming when I was sworn in, and has put our country on a solid road to economic growth," Perriello said.

Of course, a few months later, it turned out that Northrop Grumman could taketh away (laying off 330 people at Fort Eustis) just as they could giveth (supposedly 300 jobs coming our way, at a cost of $12-$14 million to Virginia taxpayers).

To quote New Left Media: While the speaker list was diverse, the overwhelmingly white crowd expressed paranoid and conspiratorial fears of multiculturalism-that atheists or black liberation theologists or radical Muslims or "free-loading" Latinos were going to ruin our country . There was the constant suggestion that white Christians and their way of life are somehow under assault, and that the attendees of this rally were here to put an end to it and return the country to what it used to be. Utter ignorance and insanity. The question is, how does the New Left Media interviewer (Chase Whiteside) manage to not completely lose his mind talking to these people? Impressive
